How CAPSOCAM PLUS Work & Retrieval Information
CapsoCam Plus® is an FDA-cleared capsule endoscopy system that allows your doctor to examine the entire small intestine using a tiny, swallowable camera. It captures a full 360-degree view of the small bowel and is designed for comfort and ease. Unlike traditional capsule exams, CapsoCam Plus does not require any external wires, belts, or recording devices, allowing you to go about your day more freely during the test.
What is CapsoCam Plus?
CapsoCam Plus is a single-use capsule that travels naturally through your digestive system while taking thousands of detailed images. All images are stored safely inside the capsule, so there is no need to wear external equipment. After the capsule is returned, the images are uploaded to a secure, cloud-based system where your physician can review the study remotely.
How does CapsoCam Plus work?
Once swallowed, the capsule uses four tiny cameras to capture images from all directions, creating a complete panoramic view of the small bowel lining. After the capsule passes naturally, it is collected at home using the CapsoRetrieve® kit and mailed back in a prepaid FedEx package. Your doctor then reviews the full exam online.
Who may benefit from CapsoCam Plus?
CapsoCam Plus may be used to evaluate the small intestine in patients with conditions or symptoms such as:
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Crohn’s disease

- Ongoing or unexplained abdominal discomfort

How CapsoCam Plus® Compares to Traditional Capsule Endoscopy
| Feature | Traditional Capsule Endoscopy | CapsoCam Plus® Capsule Endoscopy |
| Camera & Field of View | Typically uses a single forward-facing camera, which mainly looks straight ahead as it moves through the bowel. | Uses four side-facing cameras to capture a full 360-degree view of the small intestine. |
| View of the Bowel Wall | May not fully visualize the sides of the bowel or folds of tissue. | Designed to view the entire bowel lining from all directions. |
| Equipment Worn During the Test | Requires wearing a belt or external recording device during the exam. | No belts, wires, or external equipment are needed; all images are stored inside the capsule. |
| Comfort & Daily Activities | External equipment may feel bulky and can limit movement during the day. | Greater comfort and flexibility, allowing most patients to continue normal daily activities. |
| Where the Test Takes Place | Usually requires an in-office visit to swallow the capsule and set up equipment. | Often requires minimal time in the clinic; in some cases, the capsule may be swallowed at home under medical guidance. |
| How Images Are Collected | Data is stored on an external recorder that must be returned to the clinic. | The capsule is retrieved at home and mailed back for image review. |
| Use in Children & Patients with Medical Devices | External equipment may make use more challenging in children or patients with implants. | FDA-cleared for pediatric use (ages 2 and older) and safe for patients with pacemakers, insulin pumps, and similar devices. |
| Important Considerations | Limited viewing angles and reliance on external equipment. | As with all capsule exams, there is a small risk the capsule may not pass in patients with bowel narrowing, and the capsule must be retrieved for results. |
