Anorectal Manometry (ARM) in Los Angeles, CA
Anorectal manometry (ARM) measures the function of the rectum and anal sphincter muscles to help diagnose the cause of chronic constipation, difficult bowel movements, and fecal incontinence. At LA Integrative Gastroenterology & Nutrition, ARM helps our physicians identify pelvic floor problems that medications alone cannot fix, so we can recommend the most effective treatment, including biofeedback therapy.
Request an AppointmentWhat Is Anorectal Manometry?
Anorectal manometry is a diagnostic test that measures how well the muscles and nerves of the rectum and anus are working. A thin, flexible catheter with pressure sensors is gently placed in the rectum. During the test, you will be asked to squeeze, relax, and push as if having a bowel movement, and a small balloon may be inflated to assess rectal sensation and reflexes. The test is performed without sedation and is typically well tolerated.
Indications and Uses
The primary indications for ARM are fecal incontinence and chronic constipation that has not improved with laxatives, particularly when a functional defecation disorder is suspected. ARM is usually recommended after structural problems and inflammation have been ruled out, for example with colonoscopy. Key uses include:
- Fecal incontinence: evaluating anal sphincter tone, strength, and reflex responses
- Chronic constipation: diagnosing dyssynergic defecation by assessing rectal and anal coordination during simulated defecation, along with rectal sensation
- Preoperative assessment: establishing baseline anorectal function before pelvic floor surgery
- Biofeedback therapy: guiding and monitoring ARM biofeedback treatment
Conditions ARM Helps Evaluate
- Chronic constipation and abnormal defecation
- Pelvic floor weakness or spasm (anismus)
- Pelvic floor dyssynergia
- Abnormal or delayed rectal sensation
- Rectal (fecal) incontinence
ARM is often performed alongside complementary tests, such as the balloon-based Rectal Expulsion Device (R.E.D.) test and imaging, to improve diagnostic accuracy.

Anorectal Manometry FAQs
Is anorectal manometry painful?
Most patients find the test mildly uncomfortable but not painful. No sedation is needed, and the test is usually completed in about 30 minutes.
How do I prepare for anorectal manometry?
Preparation often includes an enema before the test. Our office will provide specific instructions and review your medications.
Why would I need ARM for constipation?
If constipation has not improved with fiber and laxatives, ARM can determine whether pelvic floor muscles are not coordinating properly, which requires a different treatment approach.
Can ARM help with fecal incontinence?
Yes. ARM measures sphincter strength, reflexes, and rectal sensation, helping identify the cause of incontinence and guide treatment such as biofeedback.
How much does ARM cost?
ARM is $995 for patients of the practice. Non-patients require an additional 30-minute consultation for $445.
What happens after the test?
Your doctor will review the results and may recommend biofeedback therapy, dietary changes, medication, or further testing.
