Galleri multi-cancer early detection blood test in Los Angeles

Galleri Multi-Cancer Early Detection Test in Los Angeles, CA

The Galleri test is a multi-cancer early detection blood test that analyzes cell-free DNA to screen for a signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer in adults without symptoms, typically those age 50 and older. It can also predict the likely tissue of origin. At LA Integrative Gastroenterology & Nutrition, we offer Galleri as part of a proactive, comprehensive approach to cancer prevention and early detection, alongside recommended screening tests.

How the Galleri Test Works

Cancer cells shed small fragments of DNA into the bloodstream. These fragments carry chemical tags called methylation patterns that differ from those of healthy cells. The Galleri test analyzes cell-free DNA methylation patterns using machine learning to look for a shared cancer signal and, when one is found, to predict where in the body the cancer most likely originated. All that is required is a standard blood draw, which can be done alongside routine lab work.

Key Benefits

  • Broad detection: screens for a signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer, including many with no standard screening test
  • Potential for earlier detection: may identify some cancers before symptoms develop
  • High specificity: reported specificity of about 99.5%, meaning a low false-positive rate
  • Tissue-of-origin prediction: correctly predicts the likely origin in about 89% of true-positive cases
  • Convenience: a single, non-invasive blood test

Important Limitations

  • Sensitivity varies by stage: overall sensitivity has been reported at about 51.5%, ranging from roughly 16.8% for stage I cancers to 90.1% for stage IV. A negative result does not rule out cancer.
  • Not FDA-approved: the test is not currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
  • Does not replace standard screening: you should continue recommended screenings such as colonoscopy, mammography, and cervical and lung cancer screening.
  • Clinical benefit still being studied: large trials, including the NHS-Galleri trial, are evaluating whether the test reduces late-stage cancer diagnoses and deaths.

Who Might Consider the Galleri Test?

Galleri is generally intended for adults at elevated risk for cancer, such as those age 50 and older, who have no current symptoms of cancer. Your physician will discuss your personal and family history, the potential benefits and limitations, and what a positive result would mean, including the need for follow-up diagnostic testing.

Part of a Proactive Prevention Plan

The Galleri test can complement our broader cancer screening services, including colon cancer screening, stomach cancer screening, and EsoGuard esophageal testing. It is also an option within our Executive Health Program and longevity medicine services. Please review the Galleri cancer screening consent available on our Forms page.

Galleri Test FAQs

What does the Galleri test detect?

It looks for a cancer signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer in cell-free DNA from a blood sample and predicts the likely tissue of origin when a signal is found.

Does Galleri replace colonoscopy or other screenings?

No. Galleri is meant to complement, not replace, recommended screenings such as colonoscopy and mammography.

How accurate is the Galleri test?

It has high specificity, about 99.5%, so false positives are uncommon. Sensitivity is lower for early-stage cancers, so a negative result does not guarantee you are cancer-free.

Is the Galleri test FDA-approved?

No. It is not currently FDA-approved and is available by prescription as a laboratory-developed test.

What happens if my result is positive?

A positive result means a cancer signal was detected. Your doctor will order diagnostic testing, such as imaging or procedures, based on the predicted tissue of origin.

Who should consider the Galleri test?

It is generally intended for adults with elevated cancer risk, such as those 50 and older, who have no current cancer symptoms. Your doctor will help you decide.
