EsoGuard esophageal cancer screening for chronic heartburn patients in Los Angeles

EsoGuard Esophageal Cancer Screening in Los Angeles, CA

Chronic heartburn is more than a nuisance. Over time, it can lead to precancerous changes in the esophagus. At LA Integrative Gastroenterology & Nutrition, we offer EsoGuard, a quick, non-invasive in-office test that helps detect Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

Why People With Heartburn Are at Risk

When stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the esophagus, it irritates the lining. Over time, this irritation can cause cellular changes known as Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous condition that can progress to esophageal adenocarcinoma. Acid-reducing medications such as PPIs may relieve symptoms, but they do not eliminate this risk, even when reflux seems well controlled.

The Importance of Early Detection

Esophageal cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in the U.S., with fewer than 1 in 5 people surviving five years after diagnosis. However, esophageal precancer can often be successfully treated when found early. That is why screening people at risk is so important.

What Is EsoGuard?

EsoGuard from Lucid Diagnostics is a DNA test that detects changes in esophageal cells associated with Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma. Cells are collected in the office with a swallowable balloon capsule in about 3 minutes, with no sedation, and you can resume normal activities immediately.

Are You a Candidate?

Ask our physicians about EsoGuard if you have chronic heartburn or reflux along with risk factors such as age over 50, obesity, a smoking history, a family history of esophageal cancer, or long-term use of acid reducers. Symptoms such as regurgitation, chronic cough, hoarseness, frequent burping, or a feeling of food getting stuck also warrant discussion.

Accuracy and Results

EsoGuard has about 90% sensitivity and a 99% negative predictive value. Results are typically available in 2 to 3 weeks. A positive result is followed by an upper endoscopy with biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. A negative result means disease is very unlikely, though your doctor will advise whether further testing is needed.

Test Details

EsoGuard is available to established patients for $1,995. Insurance billing and superbills are not available. For full test preparation and process information, see our detailed EsoGuard test page. EsoGuard is part of our comprehensive cancer screening services, alongside stomach cancer screening and the Galleri test.
