Understanding GERD Beyond Heartburn

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach contents repeatedly flow back into the esophagus. While heartburn is the best-known symptom, GERD can also cause regurgitation, chest discomfort, difficulty swallowing, chronic cough, hoarseness, sore throat, and a sensation of something stuck in the throat. Over time, untreated reflux can damage the esophagus and lead to complications such as esophagitis, strictures, and Barrett’s esophagus.

An Integrative Perspective on Reflux

Acid-suppressing medications can be effective and are sometimes necessary, but they do not address why reflux is happening. Our integrative approach looks at the factors that contribute to GERD, including:

  • Weakness or abnormal relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter
  • Hiatal hernia
  • Slow stomach emptying and abnormal motility
  • Low stomach acid, gastritis, and H. pylori infection
  • SIBO and increased abdominal pressure from bloating
  • Food sensitivities, trigger foods, and meal timing
  • Excess weight, stress, alcohol, and smoking

Educational GERD Presentation

The presentation below provides additional information on functional and integrative approaches to reflux. It is shared for educational purposes and does not replace an individual medical evaluation.

How We Diagnose and Treat GERD

Your evaluation may include upper endoscopy, EsoGuard esophageal testing, testing for H. pylori, and breath testing for SIBO. Treatment is personalized and may combine medication when needed with customized nutrition, a reflux-friendly therapeutic diet, targeted supplements, weight and stress management, and treatment of underlying gut conditions. GERD FAQs

Is GERD the same as heartburn?

Heartburn is a symptom. GERD is a chronic condition in which reflux happens frequently enough to cause symptoms or damage, and not everyone with GERD has heartburn.

Can GERD be treated naturally?

Many patients improve with diet changes, weight management, stress reduction, and treatment of underlying causes. Some still need medication, and your doctor will recommend the safest approach for you.

Why do I still have reflux on medication?

Acid-reducing medication lowers acidity but does not stop reflux itself. Non-acid reflux, hiatal hernia, slow stomach emptying, or other causes may need to be evaluated.

Can GERD cause throat or voice problems?

Yes. Reflux can irritate the throat and voice box, causing hoarseness, chronic cough, throat clearing, and sore throat.

When do I need an endoscopy for reflux?

Endoscopy is recommended for long-standing symptoms, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, bleeding, or risk factors for Barrett’s esophagus.

Can stress make reflux worse?

Yes. Stress can increase sensitivity to reflux and affect digestion, which is why stress management is part of our treatment plans.
